OUR STORY

My name is Tommy and I was a sailor in the U.S. Navy.  One of the favorite pasttimes of mine and my fellow sailors was to drink and our preferred drink of choice was beer.  Being in the Navy took us to exotic locations all over the world and we were afforded the luxury of tasting a variety of beers from all over the world.  The situation we usually wound up with was an American used to such mainstream beers such as Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob, Coors, Heineken, and Pabst trying such beers as Weihenstephan, Newcastle, Paulaner, Duvel, and Chimay.

I got interested in brewing beer while I was stationed on the USS Vandegrift FFG-48 while it had been stationed in Yokosuka, Japan.  On the base, we had an enlisted club.  The name of the enlisted club was Club Alliance and they brewed their own beer at the enlisted club.  The name of the beer that they brewed at the Yokosuka enlisted club was Sharky's.  The beer was made in house and it was pretty good.  Not only was it pretty good, but it was really cheap.

Speaking of cheap, let me fast forward to when I got out of the U.S. Navy in 2004.  I switched my tickets from Atlanta, GA to Boston, MA and decided to finish my studies at Boston University.  There was a definite drinking culture in Boston that was reminiscent of the pub culture I had later experienced in London, UK.  It was similar but different.  In both Boston and London, they didn't frown upon drinking.  Drinking was thought of as a way of life and people actually savored their drinks and especially their beers.  I found myself in a culture of what I like to call beer connoisseurs, but what some people would call beer snobs.

In Boston, there was a grocery store called Trader Joe's and they sold Charles Shaw wine.  We called it Three Buck Chuck.  The first name of the wine was Charles, so that's where the Chuck came from.  It was called "Three Buck Chuck" because it cost three dollars.  I loved the concept of nice wine sold cheap to the masses.  I decided that's what I wanted to do with beer.  I had asked someone why they still drunk mainstream beers like Budweiser when it cleraly didn't taste as good.  They told me they drank it because it didn't cost as much.
